In addition to my fellow classmates, I have started to follow a few people and organizations on Twitter:
@berkmancenter
@edgarschein
@Lifeisgood
@Worcester_PL
@BarackObama
@Ctr4SocialMedia
@LibraryJournal
As I searched for Twitter accounts, it was interesting to see who is already on Twitter and who isn't. Our public library (Worcester, MA) has a Twitter account. This is kind of exciting now that I sort of know what Twitter is. The town library that I do some volunteer work with on thier Facebook page, does not have a Twitter page. I have heard that it is important for businesses to participate in Twitter. If you feel that this is important, I would love to hear why.
I imagine it's much more relevant to have a twitter link in an urban or large town library. Most of the lovely small libraries dotted around quaint New England towns don't have the staff or the patron base to need Twitter. A small library doesn't have the hours to commit to high profile web presence, so it might be better just to have one forum/form of 2.0. People still come in to chat in little libraries, librarians know most of their patrons by name. Why Twitter? Facebook might be a better alternative for announcements, promotions and survey, or even just a blog.
ReplyDeleteI see your point, Lucy. There is definitely a time commitment to all of this. Selecting one media could provide a better return on the time investment.
